The Cancer Care Landscape Today
80% of cancer patients in the U.S. receive their care in Community Cancer Centers. Very few of these community centers conduct cancer research trials.
Only 3-5% of cancer patients in the U.S. are enrolled on research trials. This slows the development of new treatments.
Most Cancer Physicians don’t participate in Research Trials.
In the U.S., cancer patients receive their care in one of two facilities, either Hospital/Academic Cancer Centers or Community Cancer Centers. Both types of cancer facilities meet a need and provide benefits to society and patients. Nearly 80% of patients in the U.S. receive their cancer care in Community Cancer Centers, which are often closer to home and provide easier access to cancer care at a lower cost to patients and society. However, because of cuts in reimbursement, most Community Cancer Centers are under serious financial strain, many even to the point of closing. This has led to patients having to travel farther for their care, resulting in more travel burdens & higher cancer costs.
Cancer Research Is A Solution
Research trials are the only path to developing new cancer treatments.
Research trials provide patients with more treatment options, more hope!
Medical Bills are the #1 cause of bankruptcy in the U.S. Research trials often provide cancer treatments at no cost, a savings for both patients & society.
Research provides vital revenue to assure the continued existence of Community Cancer Centers.
Cancer research is a solution that overcomes many barriers that a patient may face, including treatment costs and lack of treatment options. Research trials provide more treatment options for patients, often cover travel costs, and shift the costs of cancer care to pharmaceutical companies. Unfortunately, only 3-5% of cancer patients ever enroll on a research trial. Research trials are the only path to develop new cancer treatments. The faster trials are accrued, the faster a determination can be made by the FDA and new treatments can become available. There is always a limited number of cancer treatments approved for each type of cancer today. Yet there are hundreds to thousands of research trials for each type of cancer that hold promise.
There are many reasons why such few cancer patients participate in clinical research trials, including lack of physicians who participate in research trials, lack of patient knowledge that research trials exist, and a number of myths & misconceptions regarding research that often scares patients away.
